Tūrangi
Tūrangi sits on the banks of the Tongariro River, which is famous for its rainbow trout – a local obsession. It is located in Tongariro National Park, one of the most popular destinations for hiking tourists and Lord of the Rings fans. This is where the scenes of Mordor, land of Sauron, were filmed.
We hiked up to a large plain with the Ngauruhoe, an active volcano, in our sights, hiding its near-perfect cone behind clouds. Tucked away into grasslands and tussocks, the Taranaki Falls is a stunning waterfall that tumbles over an ancient lava flow and falls into a shallow pool.
Taupō Lake is the largest lake in New Zealand, larger than Lake Constance. It was formed by a supervolcanic eruption approximately 26,000 years ago.
Rotorua
Rotorua is located in the center of New Zealand and is among the most active geothermal areas in the world !
We visited Whakarewarewa, a living Māori village nestled among hot springs, rainbow pools and geysers. We also witnessed a fiery “Haka”, a traditional war dance of the Māori people in New Zealand.
