The West Coast is New Zealand’s longest region, extending more than 500 kilometres down the coast of the South Island. On one side of the road there were wave-baffed beaches, and on the other side of the road were spectacular mountains and glaciers.
Fox Glacier
Fox Glacier describes both the glacier and the nearby village. Like its twin, Franz Josef, the glacier descends from the Southern Alps just fifteen kilometres away from the Tasman Sea. Nowhere else in the world will glaciers be so close to the ocean !
The Ross, an ancient gold town and the most productive goldfield in New Zealand.
Hokitika
Our next destination was Hokitika, a small coastal town with black-sand beaches covered in driftwood.
We stayed in Stations Inn, a luxury accommodation located just 5 minutes from Hokitika township on top of a hill with views looking onto the Tasman Sea. The perfect spot for watching the sunset !
