Our journey continued in the Australian Outback with a visit to the Red Rock. Uluru, Ayers Rock – or simply the Red Rock – is a massive rock outcrop formed by the slow erosion of the weaker surrounding rocks. It is made of a mineral rich sandstone which gives it its reddish color.
For the Anangi (local Aboriginal people), the rock details and features are sacred. The rock art visible in the caves around the rock is an important record of human occupation in this area. This makes Uluru and the land around it a very special place.
Ayers Rock
This is where we learned about the Aboriginal culture and tradition, bush tucker and traditional hunting weapons such as spears and boomerangs. We also listened to the enchanting sound of the Didgeridoo, an ancient wind instrument made from Eucalyptus hollow logs.
At this time of year, it was extremely hot, with temperatures averaging 35°C. For this reason, we explored Uluru in the early mornings and relaxed in our hotel room during the day.
